Poor indoor air quality is something that many homes suffer from. A lot of times individuals will end up developing health related issues due to indoor air pollutants within their place of residence but never connect the two dots together. It is said that the air quality within the home can sometimes be more dangerous than what we breathe outside. As human beings we spend most of our times indoor. It is estimated that many of us spend close to 90% of our times indoor or places considered to be a close environment (e.g work, banks, school, grocery place, gym, etc.). We can’t really control the air quality in other close environment or facilities, but we can help control the air quality within our homes. Your health and the air quality within your home go hand and hand. Indoor allergens such as pet dander, dust mite droppings, pollens, etc. are some of the biggest culprits or contributors to poor air quality within the home. But there are ways we can combat allergens and improve the air quality within our homes.
Many homes, especially those in environment where harsh winters are experienced or colder, tend to have poor ventilation. When we are in a cold environment, we tend to want to keep our doors and windows close in order to keep the heat in. If we can increase the air ventilation throughout the home then we will improve the air quality as well. Opening your doors and windows a few times throughout the week for a few minutes to allow the fresh air to come in will help improve the indoor air within your home, assuming you live in an area where outdoor air quality is good. Leaving a small window crack or small gap of one to three inches on the windows when possible will also help. The more outdoor fresh air you allow in the home, the better since you are now displacing the stale air to help create better circulation. A good air purifier is another way to help improve the air quality inside your home so you can breathe better. Having a high efficiency particulate air filter (HEPA) will help capture a fair amount of allergens that are circulating in the air throughout the home. The HEPA is designed to remove very fine particles. It is highly recommended that you use the HEPA within any air purifier you may have within the home since they are considered by many experts to be very effective at trapping various allergens and thus help improve indoor air quality. Air duct cleaning is also another method that will help with the fight against poor indoor air quality. There is not a single method that will make indoor air quality issues go away but a combination of the different methods provided here will help to create an indoor environment where the air is cleaner for you and your love ones, especially the ones that may have asthma or suffer from other health related issues that are triggered by allergens. |
