Your air duct system is unfortunately not something that can be left alone and never to be looked at again if you want to maintain an efficient performing system. If you enter a room in your house, and you notice that even though the rest of the house seems fairly warm and comfortable, yet that particular room you’ve entered is colder relative to the rest of the house, it might mean that the air duct connection to the distributing vent may have been disconnected or damaged. This scenario does happen, especially in homes that are much older on average where no one has inspected the duct system for years. The average home owner unfortunately doesn’t really think about doing air duct inspection within their homes. Usually the only time we want someone looking at our duct and HVAC system is when something has apparently gone wrong or is simply not working. We tend to be very reactive to duct inspection as opposed to proactive where we can prevent certain issues from taking place or identify them before they become a serious problem. IC Air Duct Cleaning can help you in inspecting your duct system.

Simple Duct Inspection 101
But are there things that you, the home or property owner, can do as far as inspecting some of the duct system? You may not be able to do a thorough detail inspection like a pro, but there are things that you can do, if you are willing and have the time to do so. One thing that we would recommend you have is a good inspection camera. However, if a regular phone camera is what you have in the house, that can work, though not as well. A good inspection camera will allow you to see further down the air duct with the flexible cable lens. The phone or regular hand camera will work but your arm will determine how far into the duct you can reach. A bright flash light is another good item you need to have when inspecting the internals of your HVAC air duct system.
A simple inspection you can do is to first remove the vent cover in the area or room of interest. Depending on the age of the home, you may be able to remove the duct vent without any tools. But usually a screw driver is required. After removing the cover, the next step is to take a good flashlight and try to peer through as much duct as you can. Depending on how the duct is ran you might or might not be able to see much. But this is where the camera comes in. Use the camera you have at your disposal and snap some pictures of the interior of the duct where eyes can not reach. The pictures should be able to give you a good idea on the cleanliness of your air duct or help reveal some the items that may have been thrown in there by young kids.
